Damwatch Engineering Ltd has an opportunity for a Civil Engineer for a full time role based in Wellington, New Zealand.

Damwatch is a specialised engineering consultancy - we focus on dams and their associated structures, providing strategic engineering and dam safety services for maintaining and developing dam infrastructure in New Zealand and overseas. Due to increased workload we are seeking we are seeking an experienced Civil Engineer to support these projects.

The Role

We are looking for a civil engineer with to 2 to 5 years' experience. Dam engineering is a combination of heavy civil, structural, seismic, geotechnical, hydraulics, instrumentation, data analysis, groundwater and rivers. You need to be a self-starter, motivated, willing to learn, keen to make the most of working alongside experts in the dam engineering field.

The Civil Engineer role is an opportunity to work alongside and support a group of engineers working on challenging dam projects and have the opportunity to develop your own area(s) of expertise. Depending on your skills you can anticipate working on a variety of earth dams and concrete dam types and deliver a range of services from geotechnical, seepage and dam safety investigations through seismic analysis, hydraulic modelling and upgrade design, to feasibility studies, and design and construction of dams and canals.

Ideally you will have:

  • A tertiary civil engineering qualification.
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Demonstrated civil engineering experience.
  • Excellent team-skills.
  • Analytical and interpretative skills.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines in a pressurised environment.
  • High level of computer skills with working knowledge of AutoCAD or similar would be advantage.

Damwatch Engineering Ltd is a privately-owned specialist consultancy of world-class passionate dam engineers based in Wellington New Zealand, voted the coolest little capital city in the world. We have an exciting international portfolio of work in dam engineering and applying dam safety practices to new and existing dams. Damwatch is looking for a Principal Dams Engineer with 20 years' experience in the development and implementation of dams and hydraulic structures. The successful candidate needs to have a strongly developed dam safety capability. This is a leadership role of a small team of similarly skilled engineers.

Damwatch has a unique and exciting opportunity for a Geotechnical Engineer. You will have opportunities to exercise and expand your skills in geotechnical engineering on dam projects for hydropower, water supply, mining, irrigation and flood control. The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree in engineering with a geotechnical emphasis and 3 to 8 years' experience as a Geotechnical Engineer. Academic knowledge and applied practical experience of advanced soil mechanics is essential. The ideal candidate will also have earthquake geotechnical engineering experience. Experience with dams is preferred, but not a prerequisite. The right candidate should qualify for a New Zealand Work Visa, if not already a New Zealand resident or citizen. Relocation allowance is negotiable.

The Role

The Geotechnical Engineer will work alongside and support a multi-disciplinary group of engineers and geologists working on unique and challenging dam projects. This role has expansive opportunities to develop your skills and expertise. The ideal candidate will be a motivated self-starting individual who is keen to advance and expand their geotechnical capabilities in dam engineering.

The Geotechnical Engineer will perform geotechnical, seepage, and seismic analyses for engineering assessments, feasibility studies, design and construction of dams and other hydraulic structures. Analytical, empirical, semi-empirical and numerical analysis skills are essential. This role requires the ability to perform a breadth of geotechnical engineering problem solving and to work collaboratively with others in a team environment. Project management of technical studies is an ancillary part of this role.

The Job Requisites

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in engineering with a geotechnical emphasis.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and application of advanced soil mechanics, including critical state and earthquake engineering.
  • 3 to 8 years' experience in geotechnical engineering.
  • Qualifying for a New Zealand Work Visa is required, or being an existing New Zealand Permanent Resident or Citizen. 'Geotechnical Engineer' is currently on the New Zealand Immigration Skills Shortage List, which generally qualifies a New Zealand non-resident for a Work Visa.
  • Effective communication skills (written and oral).
  • Effective inter-personal and presentation skills.
  • Effective working independently and team collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrable engineering analytical, modelling, analysis and interpretative skills.
  • Demonstrable experience preparing and analysing geological and geotechnical information.
  • Experience supervising geological and geotechnical investigations including ground conditions' logging and in-situ testing.
  • Effective general computer skills.
  • Geotechnical specific computing skills including analytical and numerical (FLAC) modelling and analyses.
